I have spent a good portion of time this summer cleaning out my closets and clearing away a lot of clutter in my life. I gave a ton of clothing, shoes, handbags and coats to charity. Welcome to Day 1 of the Back to Business Series! I’m so glad you decided to stop by. By agreeing to participate in this series with other like-minded individuals, you are taking the first step in making a change or simply maintaining a positive existence by surrounding yourself with the transformative energy of people who want to be more, do more and live more—remarkably!

I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that we imitate the behaviors of those with whom we associate most often. How many times have you caught yourself saying something that a close friend says or laughing exactly the way he or she does or doing something (even unconsciously) that he or she does (that you know is not what you do)? It’s human nature. We just do it and we can’t help it. The thing is there is nothing wrong with that if we are emulating positive behaviors and thoughts because doing so actually helps to spread them and compound their impact. But the question then becomes how do we capitalize on our natural instinct to emulate the thoughts and behaviors of those we associate with?  The answer is …by making sure we hang out with people whose thoughts and behaviors we’d want to replicate and emulate.

Your Network Determines Your Net Worth!

Have you ever heard that before? If not, think about it–it’s an awesome concept. Rich people hang out with rich people and broke people hang out with broke people (and I mean that literally and figuratively—financially, emotionally and spiritually)  The people you surround yourself with either help to lift you up and propel you forward or they bring you down and keep you back. I’ve heard some people say, “My friends don’t lift me up, but they don’t hold me down. I do what I want to do. They don’t influence me or reflect who I am.” That’s baloney or a bunch of BS (whichever word makes you see it for the lame rationalization it is).

Simply put, if you are not growing, you are dying. If you are not moving forward, you are not making progress. If you are surrounding yourself with individuals who are not helping or supporting you in moving forward, they are assisting in holding you back. Accept it. No one says you have to completely ditch your constantly complaining bff or that you have to stop talking to your negative neighbors in the effort to be a positive force in their lives, but you also have to think about yourself. You need individuals in your life who are positive influences and supporters of your growth and development.

Who are these people?

It’s hard sometimes to find people who truly want you to be successful. Some people say they want the best for you, but as soon as you start doing your best and achieving your best they start hating on you. That’s because they are not about anything. The fact is, those people are not the ones you want to emulate. You want to find people who are also interested in achieving their best—personally, professionally and physically. That way you all are achieving your best together! People who are trying to live their best lives don’t have time (nor interest) in hating on others’ success! These are the people you want to surround yourself with.

Where are these people?

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you exactly where they are physically (because they are in many different places depending on where you live), but I can tell you where they definitely aren’t. They aren’t on a website like N*Powered Women or logging on to URL’s like be-remarkable.org that’s for sure! So, what you need to do is connect with the people who are on sites like these and enlist them in your Power circle.

As you prepare for this school year, make it your mission to find a group (at least 5 or 6 people) that you will designate as your “Executive Cabinet.” These people should not be the type to allow you to get off the hook with any excuses. You will all be responsible for keeping each other accountable for achieving whatever you set out to achieve this year.
